BRATs

31 May 2008, Saturday

I haven’t blogged fully about BRATs yet. Bright Roving Annoying Teens. Anyway, it was conducted by The Star at the Sunway Hotel in Penang, and sponsored by Maybank @ MyZone & Nikon. We were “babysitted” by Niki, Pui Yee & Ian. It was the bomb ! Cheer’s to my mum who encouraged me to write in :D

Day 1.
Was a little sesat. Befriended the 4 seniors, Diyana, Gan, Miux & Muz. Had to endure the 7 hour long bus ride to Penang. I’m not sure exactly how late we were, but we did unfortunately miss the ice-breaking. Soon after we were divided into our groups and given (chose) our positions. (editor, sub-editor, reporter, photographer etc .. ) We called ourselves The Hoo-Ha’s ! Each team recieved two 8 megapixel Nikon camera’s. We were then sent to Chowrasta market, on a mission to take amazing shots of random little things, buildings, objects, road signs etc. Spent around 40 minutes wandering around, before making our way to the pit stop and then back to the hotel. Uploaded the pics and were the given the keys to our room. My roomates were Diyana (Dee) & Vino (Vee) LOL. Spent the night eating chips and munching away on junk food, all after dinner. I must say, I did learn a lot in just one day.

Day 2.

We woke up exceptionally early. Headed down, had breakfast, made more friends and bonded (mind you that I went there not knowing a single person.. same goes for most of them (: ) Two teams were assigned to do a soundslide and the other two were to record a video. Our team, accompanied by Dee & Niki, were sent to Prangin Mall which I have to say, houses the exact same shops as KL’s Berjaya Times Square & Sg. Wang (YES LAH VERY OYSTER !) Oh, and I actually met Pn.Kamala and her family there ! what an odd coincidence really :D There was an ongoing charity event there organized by these 12 churches, so yes that was our story. Got back to the hotel, downloaded the photo’s, and Rebekah basically did everything, mainly because she is super chun in multimedia stuff. Finally PENANG FOOD for dinner. You see, just right outside our hotel was a whole street filled with hawker stalls serving everything from char kuey teow to fried oyster to lobak (OMG HEAVEN) hahaha ! Continued editting our soundslide, and this is where I lent my voice ==” heh. Finally got to bed around 11pm, fell asleep while watching tv with Vee.

Day 3.

before going into the ferry (PULAU PAYAR)
Diyana, the damn damn rojak girl
a.k.a my busmate, roomate, senior, group senior and soon to be neighbour (She’s going to Taylor’s!) :D
destiny man ! hahahaha

Woke up at 6.45 because Dee assumed that we had to be at the hall early. We were down by 7.30. Had breakfast, gathered in the hall, and again boarded the buses and off we were to the Pulau Payar jetty . Took the ferry to the next Port *insert name in here* where we were to not only interview people but also record a video. Interviewed more, tourists, Penangites, yes interviewing random people can be nerve wrecking (I’M SHY LAH !) plus I’d always run out of questions. We met with the Captain of one of the ferry’s and were given immediate access into the engine room which was not only humid but also oily and noisy. Besides that we had to climb this ladder which lead to the deck ? It was kind of scary, I HAVE A FEAR OF HEIGHTS. I failed on my first attempt, and finally suceeded in my second. Amazing view from the top, the compass was a first. It was rather peculiar, the compass, much much different from the odd-pirate traditional looking one’s which we normally see. Finally got back to the hotel, had lunch, and watched Sandheep repeatedly asking Qisthina why she thought he was gay (no one’s ever called him gay before, SURPRISE !) hahaha.

The seniors and us BRATs played some eye-tearing, stomach-aching, cheek-hurting, mind-boggling games plus a bunch of riddles & puzzles which we were given to solve, and watching Tammy call everyone crazy. The Chicken Dance (the song’s from Jimmy Neutron ! lol) Banana’s, that dance-switch game we played on the last night, Johnny woops (which took me two days to solve ==” ) MamaPapa, Horses/Angels, & the ultimate Aiyoo-Ping-Pong-Pia :P

they celebrated my birthday for me ! :D
together with Jasmine & Hidayah.

We had an indoor bbQ for dinner. Went back into the hall and continued on completing our articles, soundslide and video. Oh yeah, did I mention how strenuous it was ? haha, well at least there was music blaring from the speakers on our last night, Spice Girls, Boyzone, Hit Me Baby One More Time ?! hahaha.

Finale.

sleeping bags.

We were given a one on one self defence lesson (Aikido) Joye, the ultimate giggler (lol) and Julian assisted in teaching us. So chun lah they two. Rushed to complete our article and video. Almost got emotional towards the ending. I mean, HOW CAN EVERYTHING END SO FAST ? :\ ah well, took more pictures, exchanged contact details (actually we did that the night before) and promised to keep in touch. Bonded with my cousin’s that very night :)

I didn’t leave with that many pictures (I’ll steal some from Facebook xD) but attending this workshop did sort of help ignite my passion for journalism (& photography) Remember the time when I blogged about considering MassCom in college ? ( reason why I chose Sub Science.. blaaahh)

Right now I am extremely enthusiastic about WANTING to attend more camps now. (I’m babbling)

Was blog hopping, and realised that most of us BRATs and left for the camp without blogging about it first , this is damn syok sendiri lah (I’m not sure why .. )

I miss the workshop. I miss the bonding and making new friends mainly, (which I think was one of the main objectives of the “camp”) Our articles (coming out tomorrow [Sunday 1 June] in Ole BRATs!) our soundslide (which I am so proud of not only cos of the awesome pictures which a whole team took, but also because I lent my voice for the sound over) and our video (which was in the end was a little screwed up because just when Rebekah was done editting the Window’s Video Maker stopped responding [it hanged] )

the paragraph above doesn’t make much sense, heck :)

I just realized how often I mistake salute for silhouette, heh.

I suffer from “blogger’s block” when I type too much, riight..

BYE !
